The Siberian cold spell, which supposedly hit Spain, has been a major topic and all over the news lately. These forecasts have not failed and numerous cities and regions have been struck by cold, rain, wind and snow. However, I never assumed Palma, the capital and a large part of Mallorca, to be part of the affected areas, as well as other parts of the Balearic Islands.
Sure enough, Mallorca has seen snow before, as the tips of the mountains, like the Sierra de Tramuntana, for example have been known to be covered in snow, for days, during the colder months. This time, however the snow has not only visited the mountaintops but pretty much the entire Island, leaving behind a romantic scenery of places, like La Seu or the Bellver castle, covered in white.
From the early hours of Saturday morning, residents and visitors of Mallorca have become witnesses to an incredible snowfall, turning our favorite sunny island into winter-wonderland. Up to 15 centimeters of snow later, we are stunned to find beaches covered in snow and places struggling with closed roads, such as for example Calvia, Andratx, Lluc, Soller, Valdemossa, Pollença, Bunyola, and Felanix. So rare an event, the last time we experienced anything similar in Mallorca, was during the famous snowfall of 1956.
