Originally San Telmo or Sant Elm was a small fishing nucleus with the name of Sa Palomera. San Telmo is situated in front of the small isle of Es Pantaleu and the isle of Sa Dragonera. As from the middle of the XX century with the arrival of tourism, this locality has evolved into a tourist resort with all the services that a Mediterranean touristic resort offers. At present, there is a population of over 500 inhabitants that live mainly thanks to tourism.
On a hill, behind the locality, there is an outstanding single building with the name of the Tower of San Telmo, just as many others in Mallorca, it was officially catalogued in the year 1985 as a building of Cultural Interest. It was built in the XIII century by the king Jaime II; it is a chapel and a hospital. To this architectural structure they later added the defence and watch tower, the Tower of Cala En Basset was also constructed in the XVI century to increase the vigilance over the coast. The most remarkable incident in the history of this locality took place on the 7th of September in the year 1229 when the Catalonian ships of the King Jaime I anchored between Sa Dragonera and Sant Elm in order to prepare the landing on the beach of Santa Ponsa which initiated the Christian conquest of Mallorca.
The festivities of San Telmo take place at the beginning of the month of August with a marine procession, a Mass in the church, and a popular dance. The most popular part of these festivities is the traditional battle between the Moors and the Christians which takes place on the beach. Easter Monday, when the ‘Pancaritat’ is celebrated in the tower of San Telmo, is also a special moment for the population which both the locals and the outsiders can enjoy.

Despite the urban development of the recent decades, Sant Elm still conserves the charm of the little fishing village that it was. The sandy beaches of Cala Conills and Cala En Basset, the small isle of Es Pantaleu and the isle of the Sa Dragonera form an extraordinary and natural landscape that are printed forever on the memory of those that have the privilege to see and admire it.
