The XXXI edition of the Copa de SM Rey de vela (King’s Sailing Cup) is to be one of the important events to take place in the waters of the Bay of Palma de Mallorca. It is one of the major cruiser class regattas of the entire Mediterranean, which has become a top level fixture on the global calendar.

Looking back in time, our memory tells us that the first edition took place in the year 1982 and about 50 boats participated: 35 Spanish and the rest from overseas. This competition was the first on the international circuit which in the year 1990 adopted the new IMS system for the classification of boats, as proper to the regatta. In the 2004 edition, a new category was established, the IMS 670, and it was added to those already in existence: IMS 500 and IMS 600.

In this year’s edition, as well as the obliged change in the date, between the 14th and the 21st July, because its usual date in August clashes with the Olympics in London, the King’s Cup 2012 has eliminated the length limit. Owing to this, the RI-2 class has opened the participation to boats such as the First Class 8. Without a doubt, this is good news for many boat owners as the expected participation promises a great success.
