Interestingly, when the winter snows inhabit the highest peaks of Mallorca, the plains also turn white. From late January through February and early March, when the snow sugar-coats our highest peaks, large parts of our beloved Island is covered in a carpet of almond blossoms. It is always an emotional experience to witness our natural treasures Puig Major, Galatzó and Massanella dipped in white. This picture fully unfolds during sunny days, when the almond blossoms sumptuously melt in with the icy tops of the mountains. What at first glance seems hardly distinguishable proves to be a spectacular contrast of natural forces. An inspiration for many artists and photographers throughout the years.
A high percentage of trees in the planes of Mallorca are almonds, there are approximately 4 million. These trees are deciduous and offer their fruit come summer. The flowering process takes place precisely in winter, when temperatures are cooler on the largest of the Balearic Islands. The stunning flowers blossom in shades of radiant white, pale pink and purple, each of them reminding us of the delicious juicy almonds, which will be harvested in summer.
It is one of winter’s biggest secrets in Mallorca, how a pure, summerly, blooming tree is made to compete in beauty with clear, crisp, snowy mountain tops. Walking at “almond blossom” time is fabulous, romantic and unique, and even though the trees can be seen from many parts of the island, special walks have been designed to make the most of this natural spectacle. Watching the Almond trees in intimate embrace with the white mountains is an unforgettable experience.
